Another divorce story from someone I know.
Honestly, I don't know how to react when I heard the news, and I just said politely "I'm sorry to hear that, are you Ok?"

But if you hear someone just divorced what is the right thing to say?
Maybe the right thing to say is sorry but what if the divorce debutante doesn't feel sorry at all, maybe they feel relieved or free or even happier with the new situation.

I think "I'm sorry to hear that, are you ok?" is appropriate. If she feels happier she will say so and then you could ask if there' anything you could do to help her going through this.
Maybe, along the line of ... "Is it something to celebrate or can I offer you a hug?" kind of message?
"Sorry to hear that, are you ok?" is appropriate.
